Ceramic and porcelain flooring types

Ceramic and porcelain tile are very durable and moisture resistant, which is why they are a great choice for kitchens, bathrooms, outdoor spaces, and basements. Ceramic tiles are grouped into two main types: quarry tile (shale or natural clay) and clay dust that is compacted. Flooring tiles are made from the latter and both types can be glazed or unglazed.

Glazed and mosaic tiles

Glazed tiles can be finished in high-gloss, matte or abrasive. An abrasive finish is the most slip-resistant, with the high-gloss being most slippery. So make sure before you choose your tile you have a clear understanding of the function of the space it will go into.

Mosaic tiles are made from many types of clay with color pigments resulting in a beautiful, colorful tile. They are also moisture resistant and because of the multiple clay structure, chipping is not an issue.

Quarry tiles vs. Porcelain

Quarry tiles come in natural earth tone colors in many different shapes including hexagons and squares. They are made with unglazed clay and need no added color. You’ll find them in browns, grays, and reds which are a result of the temperature and firing times.

Porcelain tiles are the hardest and strongest of all due to the extreme temperatures used when it is made. These tiles are best suited for high traffic and moisture areas.
